downtown Athens, while partaking in a one-day comprehensive, hands-on photography workshop! The workshop is based upon modern Digital Architectural Photography Techniques including in the field shooting and classroom sessions as well as instruction in Adobe Photoshop. Learn techniques in composition, exposure, lens selection, subject selection, perspective correction, blending exposures and Black and White conversion techniques.

Black History Education Program
McMinn County Living Heritage Museum
For many years the 2nd week of February (chosen so as to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln) was celebrated by African-Americans in the United States. In 1976, as part of the nation's Bicentennial, it was expanded and became established as Black History Month, and is now celebrated all over North America. Area school children will hear from individuals in first person representations of important figures in black history as well as those in our community who experienced this history first hand. Preregistration required. Meets curriculum standards for the State of Tennessee.

Cousin Jake Bluegrass Festival

This all day event showcases national and local bluegrass favorites on stage at the restored Gem Theater in Etowah, TN. Numerous bands play throughout the day and late into the evening. The area Boy Scout Lodge sells BBQ across the street during the dinner break. Many people bring instruments and impromptu jam sessions occur throughout the day at the L&N Depot Museum.

Tellico River Clean Up
Tellico Ranger Station, Tellico Plains
The Tellico River Clean U is an annual event that cleans 17 miles of the Tellico River corridor, 10 miles as well as surrounding areas. Volunteers come from all over and are essential to keeping the Tellico River area clean and pristine. Volunteers are provided trash bags, gloves and instructions to areas that need the most attention. Trash pick up is provided by the Forest Service. This event usually lasts 3 - 4 hours.

Cherokee Heritage Day

Cherokee Heritage Day is a cultural event to learn about the traditions of the Cherokee People. Join Eastern Cherokee teachers, demonstrators, and storytellers from Qualla Boundary and Snowbird Community as they share the traditions of their great and proud people. Discover and try you hand at traditional crafts. Learn about the Eastern Cherokee langauge and writing system. Hear the oral traditions (stories) passed down for generations among the Cherokee people. The day begins at 9am and ends around 2:30pm and includes a series of classes and a self-guided tour of the museum.

The men who prouldy served their country aboard the USS Ware from 1945 to 1974 come to Athens to remember her. Lieutenant Ware joined the Navy in 1929 from Athens, TN, and the City of Athens, home of the Charles R. Ware Memorial, has adopted the ship.

An American Tradition: 26th Annual Quilt Show Award Ceremony
McMinn County Living Heritage Museum
More than 250 antique and contemporary quilts will be on display in one of the south's largest shows. Quilts are judged in a variety of categories including beginners through advanced. There will also be a display of paper quilt squares done by elementary school students. Lectures, videos, workshops and a miniature quilt silent auction are highlights of the Show. Workshops will be taught by nationally recognized instructors. Retired seniors will be demonstrating traditional quilting around a quilt frame each Thursday. The Show formerly won the prestigious “Top Twenty Tourist Attractions In The Southeast” by the Southeast Tourism Society. It has also been featured in several national magazines including Southern Living, Country Living, Quilter's Newsletter Magazine, Quilts, Reader's Digest and more.

Delano Daylilies is a seasonal business, open to the public for bloom season. Bring your camera and take home a memory as well as some daylilies! Peak bloom for daylilies is late May through mid July. Delano Daylilies grows approximately 1,400 varieties of daylilies and is a National Display Garden for the American Hemerocallis Society.

Polk County Breeding Bird Foray
Polk County
The Chattanooga Chapter and Cherokee National Forest is teaming to host a breeding bird foray in the east Tennessee, Polk County during the 2008 Memorial day weekend. Many members are familiar with this long-time tradition of county forays going back into the early years of our 90 year old organization. Traditionally, forays are held in Counties that are distant from heavily populated areas and consequently get little birding attention. Members from all corners of the state converge to survey the county to document the breeding bird communities present. During the Tennessee Breeding Bird Atlas project more systematic protocols were adopted to make data collected more valuable. Counties were divided into manageable study blocks. A variety of breeding bird codes were adopted to rank the evidence of breeding for all birds recorded in the study areas and “mini routes” (shortened versions of the Breeding Bird Survey Routes) were established. This breeding bird atlas protocol will be used to survey Polk County during the Foray weekend. Polk County includes a variety of habitats including elevations over 4000 feet. and there is potential to gather breeding evidence for some species that are rarely found in the state. And, remember, Polk County was one of the last known locations for breeding Red-cockaded Woodpeckers in the state!
Orientation will be held Friday evening, May 23.
Field work will be conducted on May 24, 25, & 26.

This program will also include an on site “dig” prepared in advance for the junior archaeologists with objects relevant to the history of East Tennessee salted throughout the site. Events will also be scheduled for adults as well, such as programs designed to help individuals explore their own history through genealogy.

Sweetwater Arts Celebration
Historic Sweetwater and Willow Creek Commons
Art, craft, food, and entertainment! The Celebration will begin on Friday, May 30 at 10:00 a.m. under the tents at the Willow Creek Town Square. Forty fine art and craft artists will exhibit and offer for sale their best work. The artists booths will be open Friday and Saturday 10:00-4:00.
Friday evening beginning at 6:30 The Black Tie Optional Gala will begin. The artists booths will be open. Champagne and heavy hors d'oeuvres will be served and a silent art auction will be followed by a live auction to include the Sweetwater Arts Celebration 2008 feature original artwork in watercolor by Maggie Vandewalle. The artwork is professionally framed in the finest quality conservation and preservations methods by Morris Galleries in downtown Sweetwater.

An American Tradition: 26th Annual Quilt Show Award Ceremony
McMinn County Living Heritage Museum
More than 250 antique and contemporary quilts will be on display in one of the south's largest shows. Quilts are judged in a variety of categories including beginners through advanced. There will also be a display of paper quilt squares done by elementary school students. Lectures, videos, workshops and a miniature quilt silent auction are highlights of the Show. Workshops will be taught by nationally recognized instructors. Retired seniors will be demonstrating traditional quilting around a quilt frame each Thursday. The Show formerly won the prestigious “Top Twenty Tourist Attractions In The Southeast” by the Southeast Tourism Society. It has also been featured in several national magazines including Southern Living, Country Living, Quilter's Newsletter Magazine, Quilts, Reader's Digest and more.

Gray Fossil Site and Prehistoric Tennessee

The 17th Annual Fall Festival will be held in conjuction with Fort Loudoun State Historic Area's 18th Century Trade Faire as the "Great Island" Festival.
At Sequoyah Birthplace Museum visitors can experience Native American food, art and craft demonstrations, music, and dance. There will also be a Native American encampment featuring time periods of the 1400s, 1700s and 1800s. Special entertainment will be provided by Native American artists and storytellers. Free Cherokee name cards will be available for children 12 and under. Food and craft vendors will have items for sell as well.

A Harvest of Color: 11th Annual Japanese Quilt Show
McMinn County Living Heritage Museum
The Japanese have always had an appreciation for beautiful fabrics and sewing was a part of their everyday life. The art of quilting gives the modern Japanese woman an avenue of expression in design and color to incorporate with their appreciation of textiles. Their love of quilting will be expressed through approximately 40 uniquely beautiful quilts on loan to the museum from the Japanese Quilting Society of Tokyo, Japan. Quilts on display will combine both contemporary and one-of-a-kind designs, some made from antique Japanese fabrics. Traditional American patterns with Japanese influence add flavor to the display. Each of the pieces is worked in rich and unusual fabrics, and the makers have given great attention to detail in design, pattern and unique quilting style.
